Paddling in Gothenburg’s Moat
In the heart of Gothenburg, you’ll find Kajakbryggan’s only staffed rental station. Here, you can experience the city from the water and gain a unique perspective of the moat and the historic districts surrounding it.
The station is open for drop-ins from May to September and staffed by our team who will help you get started. You can rent pedal boats for one or two people, or kayaks with space for one, two or three paddlers. No booking is required – just stop by, rent on site, and head out at your own pace.
Through the City’s Historic Waters
The tour starts at Bältespännarparken, right next to the entrance to Trädgårdsföreningen. From here, you paddle along the canal, built in the 1600s as part of the city’s defence system, which still surrounds the old town.
The route takes you under low stone bridges and past well-known landmarks such as Trädgårdsföreningen, Feskekôrka, the German Church and Stora Teatern. The water is calm, and the distance is just right for both beginners and more experienced paddlers.
During the summer, the canals are full of life. You’ll share the water with the classic Paddan sightseeing boats, which have carried visitors through the moat since 1939.
Opening hours
The station at Göteborgs vallgrav is staffed, open from 1 May to 30 September.

A life jacket is included in the price and can be found in each watercraft. Remember to put back your life jacket, spray deck and your paddle into the kayak before you shove it into it’s booth when you’re done.
Adapt your tour after your own skill-level. If it’s your first time kayaking or paddleboarding, stay close to shore at all times. On the lake, the right-hand rule applies, and as a paddler, you must always give way. If you turn over with your kayak, don’t panic. Get out and hold on to your kayak and paddle. If you’re not experienced, the best thing to do is to swim with you kayak to shore and empty it of water.
